Miller articulated these sentiments on Wednesday, Mar 6, during a press briefing, underscoring that the United States will capitalize on every opportunity to exert pressure on the Taliban to ensure the reinstatement of girls in schools.
Addressing the issue of Afghanistani girls returning to schools, the American official remarked, “Truly, we don’t know. The heartbreaking anniversary is approaching, and we have unequivocally stated that girls should not be deprived of attending schools.” The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State affirmed their nation’s commitment to upholding the rights of Afghanistani women and girls, asserting, “We will leverage every opportunity to press the Taliban and facilitate the return of women and girls to schools.”
This scenario unfolds as the Taliban, despite global societal pressures, have yet to take any action to facilitate the return of girls to schools and universities. The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State also acknowledged that they do not foresee a clear outlook for the reopening of schools and universities to girls. While the Taliban have proclaimed they do not oppose education for girls beyond the sixth grade, they have failed to undertake any affirmative measures in this regard for over two years and persist in postponing action for tomorrow.
