RASC News Agency: Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, has recently asserted that the Taliban’s discriminatory policies amount to crimes against humanity. Bennett addressed this issue on Monday, Feb 19, via a message on his social media platform, X, and expressed his appreciation for a recent statement from the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has denounced the Taliban’s misogynistic policies and highlighted that the group’s discriminatory measures could constitute sexual persecution, recognized as a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. According to the committee, the Taliban’s systematic discrimination against women and girls grossly violates the fundamental principles outlined in the United Nations Charter and international human rights laws.
In a statement issued by the committee, it is emphasized that curbing the rights of women and girls not only undermines their empowerment and societal participation but also undermines the overall progress, stability, and sustainable development of Afghanistan. Drawing on the remarks of committee members, the Taliban have enforced strict dress codes on women, further depriving them of their rights. The United Nations urges the Taliban to take immediate action to address the dire situation of women in Afghanistan.
This occurs as the Taliban, throughout their more than two years of governance, have imposed severe restrictions on the lives of women and girls and persist in excluding them from society.
