RASC News Agency: Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban group, has stated in his latest remarks that if the United Nations appoints a special representative for Afghanistan, the group will not cooperate with them.
As reported by Amu TV on Tuesday, January 30th, Mujahid asserted that the Taliban do not deem a representative necessary, considering it superfluous for countries in “crisis and conflict.” The Taliban spokesperson further elaborated on the Doha talks concerning Afghanistan, initiated by the United Nations, indicating that they “aim to mend burnt bridges.” Furthermore, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Taliban group, expressed in a meeting on Monday in Kabul that Afghanistan does not require a UNAMA representative.
It is noteworthy that according to UN Security Council Resolution 2771, the Secretary-General of the United Nations is mandated to appoint a special representative for Afghanistan under Taliban control. Meanwhile, the Doha talks regarding Afghanistan, scheduled for February 18th and 19th, will be presided over by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. During this session, the decision regarding the appointment of a special UN representative for Afghanistan will be made.
Sources indicate that the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Taliban group has been invited by the United Nations to participate in these talks. However, based on Zabihullah Mujahid’s statement, a final decision regarding Amir Khan Muttaqi’s participation in this meeting has not yet been made.
