RASC News Agency: The Ministry of Public Health reported that 26,946 cases of heart disease have been admitted to hospitals across the country since 2022 of the current year, with the majority of them still hospitalized. In addition, 2,100 deaths due to heart diseases have occurred since last year.

The following statements were made by the Department of Public Health at a meeting on Sunday, Oct. 1, in conjunction with World Heart Day.

“In the past year, only 821 patients died due to Ischemic Heart Disease or Reduced Blood Supply to the Heart,” said the Ministry’s spokesperson, Dr. Sharaf Amarkhil. “In the last year, 26.946.000 patients with heart related diseases visited hospitals all over Afghanistan,” he added. “We have 2,000 patients in our registry. In the past year, 2.100 patients nearly died, all heart related.”

Amarkhil also says that in the past 20 years, no special attention has been paid to the provision of equipment and other services for the treatment of heart diseases in the country.

It is important to note that doctors say that several factors contribute to the development of heart disease, such as lack of adequate nutrition inability of mothers to take medicines during pregnancy inadequate diet consumption of alcohol inability to exercise insufficient number of specialist doctors

At the end of the meeting, however, WHO officials said they will work with the MOH on training health workers and improving access to health care, particularly in remote areas.
