These students were studying at the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF), after the Taliban took control of the country, after which the universities closed, they went to Iraq and are waiting for permission to enter the United States.
It is said that these students were among 110 students (AUAF) who managed to go to Iraqi Kurdistan to continue their studies at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimaniyah.
Currently, 23 students are waiting to receive approval to go to the United States, where they have been accepted to universities and have been awarded scholarships through the Qatar Scholarship Project for Afghanistani citizens to complete their undergraduate courses or pursue higher education. be complementary.
One of the students told CNN: “Now we are in a bad situation.”
More than 100 displaced Afghanistani students — 80 of them in Iraq — have already gone to the United States, where they are studying at more than 45 universities, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The spokesperson of the US State Department said that they are aware of the situation of Afghanistani students at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimaniyah, but it is not possible to say anything about individual cases.
The Department’s spokesperson added, “The US Refugee Admissions Program caseload can be long, however, we continue to prioritize processing the cases of our Afghanistani allies and work hard to expedite the processing of cases.”
It should be mentioned that 23 students who remained in Iraq have not yet succeeded in receiving P-1 approval due to security checks.
