In a recent report, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan has reported an increase in depression and suicidal thoughts among adolescent girls who have missed education. This report also shows the increase in forced marriages, child marriage, sale and trafficking of children.
Richard Bennett and his working group have prepared this report on the discrimination against women and girls in Afghanistan, and based on this report, the rights of women and girls have not been widely, systematically and comprehensively attacked in any corner of the world like Afghanistan.
The report adds that all areas of Afghanistani women’s lives have been restricted “on moral pretexts and through the instrumental use of religion.” The discriminatory and restrictive atmosphere, the frightening environment and the lack of accountability amid a flood of other human rights violations have made it impossible to realize the rights of women and girls, prevent all relevant people and institutions from defending them, and provide the ground for more defiance.
Referring to the frequent reports of depression and suicide, especially among teenage girls who are prohibited from continuing their education, the report states that this is actually contrary to the claims of the Taliban, who say that since August 2021, suicide incidents have decreased and health mentally improved.
The full version of this report is supposed to be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, June 19.
