(FAO) Warning about the Invasion of the Moroccan Locust in the North and Northeast of Afghanistan

RASC: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned about the widespread attack of the Moroccan locust on fields, including wheat, in eight provinces in the north and northeast of Afghanistan.

According to this organization, locusts have been observed in different stages of growth in Badakhshan, Badghis, Baghlan, Balkh, Kunduz, Samangan, Sar e pol and Takhar provinces. This situation has also been reported from central provinces, including Ghor.

Richard Trenchard, the representative of (FAO) in Afghanistan, called the invasion of the Moroccan locust a serious concern for the wheat of Afghan farmers.

He said: “Moroccan locust eats more than 150 plant species, including tree crops, pastures and 50 food crops, all of which grow in Afghanistan. It is a big threat to farmers, communities and the whole country.

“This year’s harvest forecasts are the best we’ve seen in three years,” Trenchard added. But this influx threatens to wipe out all these recent gains and dramatically worsen the food insecurity situation later this year and next year.”
