Escalating Violent Crimes: Young Man Murdered in Baghlan Amid Growing Lawlessness Under Taliban Rule

RASC News Agency: In yet another distressing episode reflecting the alarming surge of violent crime across Afghanistan, local sources in Baghlan province have reported the mysterious murder of a young man in Pul-e-Khumri, the provincial capital. This latest incident starkly underscores the deepening security vacuum and collapse of the rule of law under Taliban administration.’The tragic killing took place on the evening of Tuesday, June 5, within one of Pul-e-Khumri’s neighborhoods. The victim, Maqsood Ziyapoor, a resident of Farkhar district in Takhar province, had traveled to visit his wife’s family for Eid celebrations when he was brutally slain.

According to local informants, Mr. Ziyapoor had engaged in repeated verbal disputes with his father-in-law, suggesting that the murder may have resulted from an escalation of familial violence. The victim’s family has publicly accused the father-in-law of orchestrating the killing due to longstanding personal grievances. However, these serious allegations have yet to be independently verified or formally addressed by any competent authority. Despite the severity of this case, the Taliban-appointed local authorities have remained conspicuously silent, issuing no official statements regarding the circumstances, motives, or suspects involved. Security and law enforcement agencies, operating under the Taliban’s fractured system, have also withheld crucial details from the public, further fueling suspicions of widespread impunity and systemic neglect.

This brutal homicide is symptomatic of a much broader crisis engulfing Afghanistan where unsolved murders and domestic violence cases multiply against a backdrop of a judicial system that is opaque, dysfunctional, and deeply compromised. The Taliban regime’s intentional dismantling of state institutions and erosion of legal protections have emboldened perpetrators and left victims’ families bereft of any meaningful access to justice. In recent months, several similar incidents have been reported in northeastern provinces, yet none have seen rigorous investigation or prosecution. Human rights defenders and civil society activists warn that this alarming pattern of escalating violence and lawlessness is a direct consequence of the Taliban’s failure to uphold basic governance, security, and human rights protections.

As Afghanistan descends further into chaos under Taliban rule, the regime’s blatant disregard for the rule of law and human dignity exacerbates an already catastrophic humanitarian and security crisis. The international community’s muted response, coupled with the Taliban’s oppressive policies, particularly toward women and vulnerable groups, compounds the suffering of ordinary Afghanistanis who remain trapped in a cycle of violence, fear, and state abandonment. This case, emblematic of widespread lawlessness, calls for urgent international scrutiny and demands sustained pressure on the Taliban to restore accountability, uphold justice, and protect the fundamental rights of all Afghanistani citizens.
