Russia’s UN Envoy: Lasting Peace in Afghanistan Requires a Comprehensive and Realistic Approach

RASC News Agency: Russia’s representative to the UN Security Council has emphasized that the Council’s support for UNAMA’s efforts sends a strong and unequivocal message of the international community’s commitment to achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan. She underscored the need for close cooperation between UNAMA and the Taliban, asserting that sustainable peace is contingent upon the Taliban’s adoption of an inclusive and pragmatic approach toward Afghanistani society. Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, also addressed the issue of frozen Afghanistan’s assets and international sanctions, calling for an urgent resolution. She stated: “We firmly believe that establishing lasting peace in Afghanistan is impossible without developing a comprehensive and pragmatic strategy aimed at the country’s reintegration into the international community.”

Evstigneeva stressed that this strategy must be rooted in objective assessments and sustained, patient dialogue with the Taliban under the auspices of the United Nations. However, Russia’s position on Afghanistan’s stability remains contradictory, as Moscow has continued its engagement with the Taliban since the group’s return to power. While Russia has repeatedly urged the Taliban to form an inclusive government and uphold women’s rights, the group has systematically ignored these appeals.

Notably, Russia fully recognizes that the Taliban is a U.S.-orchestrated intelligence project in the region, designed to undermine regional stability, particularly in Central Asia. Over the past few years, several Taliban officials have repeatedly issued threats against Tajikistan, exposing the group’s broader geopolitical ambitions and its potential implications for Central Asian states and Russia’s regional allies.
