RASC News Agency: The World Food Programme (WFP) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s saffron farmers, focusing on enhancing their cultivation and processing practices to bolster livelihoods and promote sustainable economic growth. Recognizing the significant challenges faced by Afghanistani farmers, the WFP emphasized the need for comprehensive support to ensure resilience and progress in this vital sector. In a video shared on X, the organization described saffron farming as a critical means of sustaining families and fostering long-term opportunities.
“This is more than a livelihood; it is a lifeline for feeding families and building sustainable futures,” the WFP stated, underscoring the urgent need to back Afghanistan’s saffron farmers. The organization expressed confidence that with proper assistance, these farmers could achieve significant growth and revitalization of their trade. In June 2024, Afghanistan’s saffron industry gained global recognition when the International Taste Institute in Belgium awarded Herat’s saffron the prestigious “Superior Taste Award” for the ninth consecutive year. The accolade highlighted the unparalleled quality of Herat’s saffron, which was ranked first by a panel of distinguished international chefs.
The WFP has consistently advocated for supporting saffron farmers in Afghanistan, particularly in Herat Province, viewing the sector as a cornerstone of economic stability and a source of national pride on the global stage. However, the saffron trade, like much of Afghanistan’s economy, has suffered severe setbacks following the Taliban’s return to power. The ensuing economic collapse has led to widespread poverty and unemployment, stalling agricultural and commercial activities across the country. Companies that once supported saffron farmers have drastically reduced their operations, compounding the challenges faced by the sector.
The WFP’s renewed focus on aiding saffron farmers offers a beacon of hope for rejuvenating Afghanistan’s agricultural economy. This initiative aims to counteract the economic decline under Taliban rule and restore a sense of stability and opportunity to a critical segment of the country’s workforce.
