RASC News Agency: The World Food Program (WFP) has raised an alarm over the impending winter in Afghanistan, warning that millions of citizens are grappling with critical food shortages. In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, December 16, the organization revealed that countless families are confronted with stark, life-threatening decisions. The WFP emphasized that many Afghanistani families must choose between securing warmth or food for their children. Earlier, the agency reported that 14.8 million people in Afghanistan would require immediate humanitarian assistance during the harsh winter months.
In parallel, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that out of the approximately 23 million Afghanistanis in need, only 15 million are expected to receive aid in 2024. International relief organizations have predicted an exceptionally difficult winter for the Afghanistani population. Despite the Taliban imposing heavy taxes on citizens and receiving substantial financial support both officially and unofficially from countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations, as well as from Asian powers and their intelligence networks, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen.
It is notable that the Taliban’s policies have systematically disenfranchised the Afghanistani people. The group has not only taken over government institutions, barring employment for anyone outside their ranks, but has also exerted control over private enterprises, prohibiting individuals from working without explicit authorization. As a result, the Afghanistani population finds itself increasingly trapped in a cycle of poverty, deprivation, and despair under Taliban rule.
