The sources revealed that Younas was detained two days ago in the Zazi Aryub district, subjected to severe torture, and ultimately executed by gunfire. According to eyewitness accounts, the Taliban returned Younas’s body to his family on Saturday. Before his death, Younas had been engaged in private work following the Taliban’s return to power. Despite his non-involvement in any military activities, he fell victim to the ongoing campaign of vengeance against former military personnel.
The Taliban’s local authorities in Paktia have remained silent regarding the incident. This extrajudicial killing is part of a troubling pattern. The Taliban have repeatedly detained, tortured, and executed former members of the Afghanistan military under various pretexts. Just days ago, two other former soldiers were arrested in Taywara district, Ghor province. Despite their public commitment to the United States to avoid reprisals against Afghanistani citizens, particularly former military personnel, the Taliban have systematically violated these assurances. Over the past three years, thousands of former members of the Afghanistani National Army and security forces have been arbitrarily detained, brutally tortured, and executed.
This relentless campaign of retaliation continues unabated, with near-daily reports of executions surfacing across the country. These targeted killings have left Afghanistan’s former military personnel and their families in constant fear, highlighting the deteriorating state of human rights under Taliban rule.
