World Food Programme Distributes Cash to Four Million in Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan

RASC News Agency: The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that nearly four million individuals in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan have received cash assistance since the start of this year. In a statement released on Sunday, October 6, via its social media platform X, the WFP noted that half of the recipients are women. The organization stated, “This (cash assistance) empowers them to spend on the needs their families deem most essential.”

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, women have been subjected to severe restrictions, including being deprived of the right to work. Last week, the WFP emphasized that women in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan have minimal opportunities to earn a livelihood. While the WFP continues to provide aid to thousands of Afghanistani women, residents of certain provinces allege that the Taliban are misappropriating these funds, as they have done with other forms of assistance.

Citizens claim that international aid distribution is managed under Taliban supervision, with the group selecting the regions for distribution. No organization, they say, is allowed to distribute aid independently of the Taliban’s directives. Consequently, much of the aid is reportedly directed to the southern provinces and primarily to Pashtun tribes, with the Taliban arguing that foreign aid had been concentrated in other regions for the past two decades and that “now it is our turn.”
