Son of Mosque Imam and a Young Woman Killed on Allegations of Adultery in Nangarhar

RASC News Agency: Local sources from Nangarhar report that a young woman and a man were killed in Dara-e-Noor district after being accused of having an “illicit relationship.” According to reports, the two individuals were charged with engaging in an improper relationship and were subsequently murdered shortly thereafter. A resident of Dara-e-Noor stated that the incident occurred two nights ago, on Friday, September 27, in the village of Qala-e-Shahi. The source added that the young man had entered the girl’s home during the night, where he was caught in the act by her brothers and then both were fatally shot.

The victims were identified as a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old boy, both of whom were unmarried and residents of Qala-e-Shahi village in Dara-e-Noor district. Another source from the area revealed that the young man, named Mohammad Elyas, was the son of the local mosque’s imam in Qala-e-Shahi. Taliban officials in Nangarhar have not yet commented on the incident. Such killings are reported intermittently across various provinces, where women and girls are frequently the primary victims. Additionally, the Taliban government regularly arrests and prosecutes individuals accused of “illicit relationships,” subjecting them to public lashings.

Since reclaiming control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly administered public floggings. A few months ago, a young man and woman were lashed in Kandahar. Reports indicate that the Taliban often extract forced confessions from the accused, and many are punished without proper evidence or legal proceedings. Since the Taliban’s return to power, mysterious killings, arbitrary detentions, and instances of sexual violence have sharply risen in different regions. Evidence suggests that Taliban members are heavily implicated in many of these cases, with a growing number of these incidents being exposed by local communities.
