Tajikistan Exports Over $82 Million in Electricity to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan Within Eight Months

RASC News Agency: Reports from Tajikistan indicate that the country has exported electricity worth more than $82.3 million to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan over the past eight months. Notably, Tajikistan has supplied 80% of its electricity exports to Afghanistan. Furthermore, the value of electricity exports to neighboring countries in 2024 has seen a decrease of $2.8 million compared to the same period last year.

During the first eight months of 2024, Tajikistan generated approximately 15.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, with 6.5% of this total exported. The country has entered into electricity export agreements for 2024 with both Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. While electricity exports to Uzbekistan occur exclusively during the summer months, shipments to Afghanistan continue throughout the autumn and winter.

The agreement for electricity transfer to Afghanistan was signed in late December 2023 between the Taliban-controlled Breshna Electricity Company and the head of the Tajikistan Electricity Company in Turkey. Afghanistan sources approximately 75% of its electricity needs from neighboring countries, with Tajikistan being one of the primary suppliers.

It is significant to note that Tajikistan remains the only nation in the region that does not maintain a favorable relationship with the Taliban. Occasionally, media affiliated with the Taliban launch extensive propaganda campaigns against Tajikistan. Additionally, the Taliban has accommodated the Tajikistani Ansarullah group, alongside various other terrorist organizations, within Afghanistan and in the northeastern regions.
