Yaqoob Yasna: Those Who Consider a Woman’s Voice as ‘Awrah’ Are Ignorant of Modern Human Knowledge

RASC News Agency: Prominent Afghanistani writer, Yaqoob Yasna, has joined the campaign supporting Afghanistani women under the banner “A Woman’s Voice Is Not ‘Awrah’.” Yasna emphatically stated that a woman is human, and her voice is not ‘awrah.’ Those who consider it otherwise are “ignorant of contemporary human knowledge.”

In a post on Facebook, Yasna wrote, “Women, like men, are endowed with thought, intellect, and individuality. There is no human privilege that separates the sexes. Those who deem a woman’s appearance, body, or voice as ‘awrah’ are distanced from the intellectual, cultural, social, and scientific evolution of humankind.” Yasna further asserted that there is no human privilege between men and women, and all are entitled to equal rights.

This statement comes as Afghanistani women have launched a protest campaign under the slogan “A Woman’s Voice Is Not ‘Awrah’,” in response to the Taliban’s newly enacted law of “Amr bil Ma’ruf and Nahi an al-Munkar,” Vice and Virtue), which deems a woman’s voice as ‘awrah,’ forbidding them from traveling without a male guardian and mandating the covering of their faces. In reaction to this law, Afghanistani women have taken to social media, singing various songs to assert that a woman’s voice is not ‘awrah.’ A number of Afghanistani men have also expressed their support for the women’s protest.
