German Foreign Minister: Taliban’s New Decree Strips Afghanistani Women of Their Dignity, Rights, and Voice

RASC News Agency: Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s Foreign Minister, has vehemently criticized the Taliban’s recent enactment of the “Amr bil Maruf wa Nahi Anil Munkar” decree, condemning it as nearly 100 pages of “misogyny.” On Friday August 23, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Baerbock declared, “These draconian rules deprive Afghanistani women of their dignity, rights, and voice.”

Minister Baerbock further asserted that through this decree, the Taliban intend to silence half of Afghanistan’s population. She emphasized that this law starkly illustrates the impossibility of engaging with radical Islamists. Recently, the Taliban announced that their leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has ratified this law, making it enforceable.

The decree mandates that women must cover their entire bodies, and it categorizes a woman’s voice as ‘awrah’ (something to be concealed). It dictates that women’s clothing should not be short, thin, or tight, and that when women leave their homes, they must cover their face, voice, and body.

The decree also imposes strict regulations on men’s appearance, prohibiting them from shaving or trimming their beards. Furthermore, the Taliban have banned listening to music and viewing videos or images of living beings on computers and mobile phones. Strict penalties have been established for those who violate these decrees.
