RASC News Agency: Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has asserted that the Taliban’s restrictive policies not only violate human rights and fundamental freedoms but also contribute to potential instability in Afghanistan. In his address to the UN Security Council on Friday evening, June 21, Guterres highlighted that these policies adversely affect the livelihoods of the Afghanistani people and exacerbate the humanitarian burden.
The UN Secretary-General described the situation of women in Afghanistan as “deplorable,” calling it one of the most glaring examples of the regression of women’s rights globally. He remarked, “Women and girls in Afghanistan are systematically deprived of their rights and positions in all spheres of public life, including education, and the impact of this will be felt in the coming years.” Guterres emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue and the meaningful participation of women.
The Secretary-General also expressed concern over the Taliban’s use of force to suppress peaceful protests and their restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly. He noted, “It is troubling that Taliban officials continue to interfere with media operations and editorial content. A vibrant civil society and free press are crucial components of freedom of expression and essential elements of a participatory public life, and must be respected.”
Guterres urged the Taliban to revoke restrictive policies that prevent the Afghanistani people from enjoying their fundamental rights.
