Taliban Imposes Public Punishments in Ghor: Lashes for Moral Offenses

RASC News Agency: The Taliban Supreme Court has announced the sentencing of eight individuals, including one woman, in Ghor Province to lashing for moral corruption and elopement. Some have also received imprisonment. This verdict is being carried out at the Firuzkoh Sports Stadium, the provincial center of Ghor. On Tuesday, May 28th, the court declared that these individuals face serious charges, and their punishment, in the form of lashing, is being publicly executed.

However, the Taliban court did not elaborate on the substantiation of these charges or provide the defendants an opportunity to defend themselves, raising concerns about human rights violations and the defendants’ lack of access to fair judicial processes and legal representation. Reports suggest that the Taliban has repeatedly imposed lashing punishments in recent months without legal trials and without allowing defendants to defend themselves.

These actions, conducted arbitrarily and disregarding basic human rights, signify widespread human rights violations and the absence of justice in the Taliban-controlled judicial system. Such public and severe punishments evoke memories of the Taliban’s previous rule, characterized by widespread human rights abuses and disregard for judicial fairness.

Once again, these actions have brought the international community and human rights organizations’ attention to the alarming human rights situation in Afghanistan.
