RASC News Agency: Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, asserted during a hearing with Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the chain of events was initiated when Afghanistan fell back into Taliban control. On Thursday night, May 23rd, the House Foreign Affairs Committee issued a statement quoting McCaul. He connected the situation to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The committee’s statement proclaimed that the “deadly” and “disastrous” withdrawal from Afghanistan would remain a “stain” on U.S. foreign policy for generations. In the hearing, McCaul also contended that the evacuation process from Afghanistan had “failed.” He claimed that over a thousand Americans and nearly 20,000 Afghanistani collaborators are currently under threat from the Taliban.
This Republican critic of the Biden administration demanded that Blinken testify before the committee regarding the Afghanistan withdrawal next September. The statement noted that Secretary Blinken agreed to McCaul’s request. During the hearing, Blinken stated, “Mr. Chairman, I have appeared before this committee five times, including once solely on Afghanistan, but each time I am questioned about it.”
Following the U.S. withdrawal, which allowed the Taliban to regain control, the Biden administration has faced continual criticism. Led by Republicans, the House Foreign Affairs Committee has been investigating the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and its implications for American foreign policy for some time.
