RASC News Agency: The Pakistani newspaper Express Tribune, citing its sources, reports that Islamabad has declared its support for the appointment of a special representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan, under the influence of the Taliban regime, which is considered a major supporter of the group. According to the newspaper’s report, published on Sunday night, Feb 18, Pakistan made this announcement simultaneously with the convening of the second Doha meeting on Afghanistan.
Previously, Pakistan had expressed concern about the appointment of a special representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan under the influence of the Taliban group. However, the Express Tribune, without specifying its sources, adds that Pakistan currently supports the UN proposal for appointing this representative. According to the report, Islamabad has stated that the UN special representative designated for Afghanistan must be “Muslim, experienced diplomat, and regionally oriented.”
Furthermore, the Express Tribune, quoting a Pakistani official, adds that Islamabad no longer advocates for the Taliban’s demands in international forums. Pakistan’s change in stance regarding support for the UN special representative is in direct contradiction with the Taliban’s position, as the group has repeatedly expressed opposition to the appointment of a UN Secretary-General’s special representative.
