RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the US representative for women’s and human rights affairs in Afghanistan, has recently stated that reports indicate some girls detained by the Taliban under the pretext of veiling have remained in prison overnight and have resorted to self-harm and suicide out of fear of abuse. The US representative for women in Afghanistan raised this issue on Saturday, Feb 10, through a message on the social media platform “X,” adding that opponents of the Taliban’s compulsory veiling policies endanger lives by discussing this issue.
According to Rina Amiri, girls and women detained and imprisoned by the Taliban for not adhering to the group’s prescribed veiling standards have engaged in self-harm and suicide out of fear of “dishonor.” Amiri stated that actions taken under the guise of orders are “insulting” and have a devastating impact on women, girls, and families. Amiri emphasized that the Taliban have detained and harassed hundreds of women and girls, forcing them to pay “humiliating fines.”
Furthermore, Amiri added that these actions must cease, and the Taliban must be held accountable. According to the US representative for women and human rights in Afghanistan, the Taliban are undermining half of Afghanistan’s potential and stripping the Afghanistani people of self-sufficiency, stability, and hope. In recent weeks, the Taliban have detained and imprisoned several women and girls, mainly young ones, from various parts of the country under the pretext of not adhering to the group’s veiling standards.
