RASC News Agency: Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban group, recently asserted that women’s rights in Afghanistan are comprehensively protected, going so far as to claim that no other country in the world has safeguarded women’s rights like the Taliban. These statements were made during a meeting of religious scholars in Kandahar, and an audio file was released on Wednesday, January 17th.
Throughout the meeting, Mullah Hibatullah emphasized that the Taliban has implemented measures to ensure women’s rights in various domains, encompassing inheritance rights, prevention of forced marriages, and provision of dowry for women. He declared that these rights are now guaranteed under their rule.
However, it is imperative to highlight that, notwithstanding these claims, the Taliban’s governance in Afghanistan over the past two years has led to the issuance of 80 decrees hindering women’s education and employment opportunities. These decrees have severely impacted women’s ability to work in both governmental and non-governmental positions.
Furthermore, it is crucial to emphasize that since assuming power, the Taliban has been implicated in the arrest, torture, imprisonment, disappearance, and killing of young women and girls for various reasons. These actions starkly contradict the assertions made by Mullah Hibatullah regarding the protection of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
International organizations have previously released reports identifying Afghanistan under Taliban rule as the sole country globally where basic rights and education were denied to girls and women.
