RASC News Agency: The Governor of Khorasan Razavi Province, Gholamhossein Mozaffari, has announced that Iran’s exports to Afghanistan have exceeded $2 billion this year. Seeking to further enhance trade relations, Mozaffari has called for the accelerated implementation of Iran-Taliban agreements to develop vital border infrastructure, emphasizing that economic stability is directly tied to security. According to a report by IRNA on Sunday, February 16, the Khorasan Razavi governor underscored the need for governmental bodies to streamline both exports to and imports from Afghanistan. He cautioned that the lack of coordination between Iranian border authorities and the Taliban could significantly hinder trade volume.
Mozaffari further pointed out that one of the primary reasons for the persistent delays faced by Iranian trucks at border crossings is the absence of effective, direct, and transparent communication between the executive institutions of both sides. Addressing a Border Management Council meeting in Khorasan Razavi, he stated, “Bureaucratic and logistical obstacles at customs and border checkpoints must be minimized to fully leverage the available trade capacity.” Despite the Taliban’s ethnic, linguistic, political, cultural, and religious authoritarianism, the Islamic Republic of Iran has continued to maintain a cooperative relationship with the group. Iranian officials appear to believe that strategic investment in the Taliban could serve their long-term geopolitical interests.
However, this assumption fails to account for the Taliban’s deep entrenchment in American geopolitical calculations and their reliance on U.S. intelligence funding. In reality, Iran’s ideological and strategic vision is fundamentally at odds with the Taliban’s ethnonationalist and extremist-Islamist agenda, leaving little room for Tehran in the group’s broader framework.
