RASC News Agency: The Taliban assert that 234 radio stations in Afghanistan are operating in full compliance with the group’s policies and regulations. Habib Ghofran, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture, stated on the occasion of World Radio Day that these stations are functioning alongside other media platforms across the country. According to Ghofran, only 33 radio stations have been granted operational licenses since the Taliban assumed power three years ago. He further claimed that the presence of media outlets in Afghanistan reflects the government’s commitment particularly that of the Ministry of Information and Culture to supporting journalism and upholding freedom of expression.
Ghofran emphasized that these radio stations broadcast strictly in accordance with Taliban policies. He added that Afghanistani media disseminate a diverse range of programming, including news, economic analyses, educational content, religious discussions, and social affairs. He insisted that these outlets continue to operate within the framework of Taliban directives and what he described as “authentic Afghanistani culture.” Despite such assertions, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on independent media. The group does not allow radio stations to function under their own editorial policies; instead, they are required to comply with Taliban-imposed guidelines.
In observance of World Radio Day, several Afghanistani journalists have renewed their calls for greater access to information from the Taliban. While acknowledging a modest improvement in information accessibility compared to previous years, journalists have urged the Ministry of Information and Culture to ensure that spokespersons provide more comprehensive details to the press. Notably, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also marked the occasion by highlighting in a post on X that radio serves as a powerful medium that connects societies.
World Radio Day was officially designated by the United Nations in 2012 and is observed annually on February 13.
