RASC News Agency: Local sources from Panjshir inform RASC News that the Taliban have recently escalated efforts to force young men in the province to join their ranks. These sources report that the group has issued explicit threats, coercing youth to either enlist in their forces or face arrest and imprisonment on charges of opposing the regime. Asadullah, a Panjshir resident, told RASC News: “The Taliban have demanded that the youth of Panjshir join their ranks and perform duties on their behalf.” He further noted that the Taliban’s intention is to showcase that Tajiks, particularly those from Panjshir, are part of their forces in order to project an image of inclusivity and legitimacy.
In recent weeks, multiple reports have emerged detailing the Taliban’s coercive recruitment tactics within Panjshir’s security apparatus. Several residents of Panjshir corroborated these reports, revealing that the Taliban’s Ministries of Defense and Interior have been actively identifying individuals in various villages, compelling them to join their administration. Those who refuse are arrested under a variety of pretexts and imprisoned. Ahmad, a local administrator, remarked: “In the past month alone, approximately 57 individuals have been detained across Panjshir, with most of them arrested for refusing to join the Taliban’s security forces.”
This recruitment drive comes amid the Taliban’s assertion that, under the direction of their leader, youth from Panjshir are being recruited into government positions, irrespective of their past affiliations. The group has warned that rejection of these offers is tantamount to opposing their regime. Over the past three years, the Taliban have routinely detained and imprisoned Panjshir residents on various charges, often using fabricated accusations. This latest effort to forcibly recruit local youth is viewed as a further attempt to consolidate their control over the region and manipulate ethnic representation to strengthen their claims of legitimacy on the global stage.
