U.S. Security Center: Global Community Must Escalate Pressure on the Taliban

RASC News Agency: A prominent American organization has called on nations worldwide to amplify their efforts in pressuring the Taliban, urging the international community to strengthen legal actions against the group at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to achieve significant outcomes. The American Security Center highlighted that initiating legal proceedings against the Taliban in the ICJ for systemic gender-based discrimination and the persecution of women is a commendable step. However, it emphasized the need for these efforts to be pursued with greater resolve and persistence.

The organization condemned the Taliban for plunging the Afghan populace into severe hardship, describing their governance as a “prison of oppression and darkness” that has stifled the country’s progress. The statement asserted that the Taliban have no “unchecked authority” under international law when it comes to the rights of women. Nevertheless, it acknowledged that the legal case against the group may take several months to reach the ICJ, underscoring the critical need for urgency in addressing these violations.

The urgency of the situation has been compounded by a recent Taliban decree prohibiting domestic and international NGOs from employing women. The statement described this development as further evidence of the group’s oppressive policies, calling for immediate international action. Since seizing control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have imposed draconian restrictions on civil liberties, particularly targeting women. Through the enforcement of their Amr bil Ma’ruf (Promotion of Virtue) edicts, they have mandated unquestioning compliance with their extremist governance, curbed freedoms, and criminalized dissent.

In recent months, the Taliban have intensified their oppressive measures, including imposing nighttime curfews in several provinces. Residents in affected areas have been warned that anyone found outside their homes after 9 p.m. will be detained. This call to action by the American Security Center reflects mounting global concerns over the Taliban’s egregious human rights violations and highlights the pressing need for a united international front to address these atrocities.
