RASC News Agency: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that the UN Security Council will hold a session tomorrow to address the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. In a statement released on Wednesday, December 11, UNAMA confirmed that Rosa Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of UNAMA, will deliver a speech during the session.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM Kabul time. Prior to this, the Security Council had indicated that after the formal proceedings, private discussions would take place behind closed doors. The statement further mentioned that Otunbayeva, along with Ecuador’s Ambassador Andres Montalvo Sosa, the Chair of the Afghanistan Sanctions Committee, and a representative from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), will address the council. Although the specific agenda remains undisclosed, various UN bodies operating in Afghanistan have repeatedly raised alarms about the worsening humanitarian crisis and the severe human rights violations perpetrated by the Taliban.
Notably, during the Taliban’s three-year rule, UNAMA has faced criticism for its passive role, at times seemingly justifying the Taliban’s anti-humanitarian policies. Sources within UNAMA report that many senior local staff members have been accused of lobbying for the Taliban due to ethnic and tribal connections. These individuals, who once supported the ethnocentric and unjust policies of the Karzai and Ghani administrations, are now allegedly backing the Taliban’s sectarian and discriminatory agenda.
As the session unfolds tomorrow, the international community will be keenly watching to see how the UN Security Council addresses Afghanistan’s rapidly deteriorating situation and whether meaningful action is taken to respond to these pressing concerns.
