EU Denounces Taliban’s Ban on Women Studying Medicine as a Gross Violation of Fundamental Human Rights

RASC News Agency: The European Union (EU) has strongly denounced the Taliban’s latest decree barring women from attending medical institutes, describing it as a “grave and egregious violation of fundamental human rights.” In its statement, the EU condemned the ban as a shocking assault on women’s access to education and a stark demonstration of the Taliban’s disregard for basic human dignity. The decision, the EU declared, is deeply troubling and inhumane.

Released today Wednesday, December 4, the EU’s statement expressed grave concerns over the decree’s wide-reaching ramifications, emphasizing that it will exacerbate Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian crisis and intensify the suffering of its population. “This draconian ban not only strips women of their right to education but also undermines the critical role of women in achieving self-sufficiency, fostering development, and ensuring the prosperity of any nation,” the statement asserted. The EU called on the Taliban to immediately reverse these discriminatory policies and fulfill their obligations under international law, which include guaranteeing equal access to education and primary healthcare for all citizens of Afghanistan.

Reaffirming its commitment to defending Afghanistani women and girls, the EU pledged to support all those whose rights are being systematically eroded under the Taliban regime. Since regaining control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have faced widespread condemnation for their escalating human rights violations. The recent prohibition on women studying medicine is the latest in a series of oppressive measures targeting women.

Previously, the Taliban had closed universities and schools to female students, effectively barring women and girls from formal education. These ongoing restrictions have drawn strong criticism from the international community and human rights organizations, who view them as a direct attack on the basic freedoms and dignity of Afghanistani women. The EU emphasized that equal participation of women in education and the workforce is not merely a matter of gender equality but a cornerstone of a nation’s growth, stability, and resilience. The international community continues to call for the immediate cessation of these oppressive practices.
