Taliban Publicly Flog Individual in Maidan Wardak on Charges of “Sodomy”

RASC News Agency: The Taliban publicly flogged an individual in Maidan Wardak province, reportedly on charges of “sodomy.” In a statement, the Taliban’s Supreme Court confirmed that the individual was whipped “39 lashes” in Saydabad district. Furthermore, the court sentenced the accused to two years in prison.

In the past month alone, the Taliban have reportedly subjected over 90 individuals, including women, to public flogging across various provinces for alleged offenses. In its latest quarterly report, covering July through September, the United Nations documented that 111 individuals had been publicly flogged by the Taliban in different regions of Afghanistan during this period.

This UN report, which meticulously records incidents of corporal punishment, reveals that the Taliban publicly lashed 95 men, 15 women, and one girl. In response, the UN Human Rights Council recently condemned these acts of corporal punishment and urged the Taliban to halt these practices immediately.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has expressed grave concerns over the lack of access to a fair judicial system within Taliban-controlled courts, citing deep worries over persistent human rights violations. Over the past three years, the Taliban have been reported to detain, torture, and even execute individuals at their discretion, often without due process. Accusations are leveled, and judgments are handed down in the absence of legal oversight, underscoring a troubling disregard for the rule of law.
