RASC News Agency: Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the Special Representative of Iran’s President for Afghanistan, emphasized that preventing the mass migration of Afghanistani nationals to neighboring countries was a key focus of the recent “Moscow Format” meeting. In an interview with “IRNA” on Sunday, October 13th, Qomi shared that representatives from Afghanistan’s neighboring countries stressed the need for a concerted fight against terrorism under the Taliban’s rule and the imperative to create better living conditions for the Afghanistani people.
Qomi stated, “The Moscow Format gathered neighboring states to discuss how to aid Afghanistan in combating terrorism and to foster stability, thereby mitigating the migration crisis.” He further underscored that despite shifting global dynamics, Afghanistan remains a top priority for regional actors. The Iranian diplomat noted that one of the most effective solutions for addressing Afghanistan’s problems is through regional collaboration, leveraging the capacity of neighboring countries. He referred to the sixth “Moscow Format” meeting on Afghanistan, which had recently convened with representatives from the Taliban, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
In the final statement, participating countries expressed deep concerns about Afghanistan’s security and the increasing presence of “terrorist organizations” under the Taliban’s governance. They emphasized that such groups pose serious threats to both global and regional security. While Iran is alarmed by the influx of millions of Afghanistani migrants, its government has maintained favorable relations with the Taliban. However, these officials have yet to fully acknowledge that the primary driver of Afghanistani migration to Iran and other countries is the Taliban’s oppressive and destabilizing regime.
