Hollywood Actress: In Afghanistan, a ‘Cat’ Has More Rights Than a ‘Woman’

RASC News Agency: Meryl Streep, the iconic Hollywood actress, remarked that in Afghanistan, a “cat” enjoys more rights than a “woman.” According to a report by SBS News on Tuesday, September 24, Streep made this statement during a United Nations conference held the previous day. Her comments were aimed at drawing the attention of world leaders to the dire situation faced by women in Afghanistan. Streep warned, “The current state of Afghanistani society is a global alarm bell.”

She emphasized that, in this modern era, Afghanistani girls are being systematically denied access to education under the Taliban regime, with bans on attending schools and universities. “A cat can walk freely in society, bask in the sunlight, but a woman is denied even this basic right,” Streep said. She condemned the Taliban’s actions, stating that they have turned Afghanistan into a living hell for women, marginalizing them from society under the guise of religious doctrine. She poignantly added, “A bird may sing in Kabul, but a girl is not permitted to raise her voice.”

It is worth noting that the Taliban’s newly enacted laws, imposing harsh restrictions on women, have drawn widespread criticism both nationally and internationally. In a recent statement, Antonio Guterres stressed that the continued oppression of women is impeding Afghanistan’s progress. He warned that as long as these restrictions remain in place, Afghanistan will struggle to gain recognition and credibility in the international community.
