U.S. Reaffirms No Direct Financial Aid to Taliban

RASC News Agency: Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, reiterated that the United States does not provide “direct financial aid” to the Taliban. During a press briefing on Monday night, Miller addressed concerns regarding U.S. financial aid potentially reaching inappropriate recipients in Afghanistan. He asserted, “When it comes to U.S. financial aid to the Taliban, we explicitly do not provide financial assistance to them.”

Despite these claims, it is alleged that significant funds labeled as humanitarian aid are funneled to the Taliban, sustaining their governance. Analysts argue that without substantial U.S. financial support, the Taliban would struggle to cover ongoing expenses for their ministries. The Taliban’s budget is primarily funded through religious taxes such as “usher” and “zakat” and other sources, often misappropriated within the group. Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front, recently stated that the Taliban would be unable to support their fighters without U.S. financial aid.

Additionally, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) highlighted in its latest report that the State Department has not adequately vetted Afghan aid recipients per U.S. policy. SIGAR emphasized the risk of terrorist groups accessing U.S. aid to Afghanistan. Previously, Congressman Timothy Burchett criticized the State Department for failing to prevent Taliban access to U.S. humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. Burchett argued, “American taxpayers’ money should not go to our enemies.”

On June 25, Burchett announced the passing of the “Prohibition on Sending Taxpayer Dollars to the Taliban” bill in the House of Representatives. Should this bill pass in the Senate, the State Department would be required to report which countries, besides the U.S., have provided aid to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan since 2021. Additionally, the bill urges the State Department to encourage other nations to ensure their aid does not end up with the Taliban.

It has repeatedly been revealed that aid intended for the Afghanistani people is often misappropriated by the Taliban.
