RASC News Agency: Timothy Burchett, Vice Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced that a bill to halt foreign financial aid to the Taliban has been passed. According to a statement released on Wednesday, June 26, on the official website of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill to cut off the Taliban’s access to U.S. financial aid.
Timothy Burchett, who introduced the bill to Congress, emphasized that not a single taxpayer dollar should end up in the hands of “terrorists.” Burchett stated that the bill to end the Taliban’s access to U.S. foreign aid was likely to be approved. Fox News quoted him saying, “Any money that goes to the Taliban is highly inappropriate. We have a $35 trillion debt and do not need to finance our enemies.”
Since the Taliban took over the country, the U.S. has sent over $2.8 billion in humanitarian and development aid to Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Recently, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported that in the nearly three years since the Taliban’s takeover, U.S. aid partners in Afghanistan have paid at least $10.9 million in taxes and utility costs to the Taliban.
Reports indicate that since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan’s economic situation has deteriorated, with repeated warnings about the country’s economic collapse. The Taliban have yet to take any steps to improve the economic conditions.
