Afghanistani Citizens Face Human Rights Violations by the Taliban

RASC News Agency: The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, in its latest quarterly publication (Issue No. 69), has examined populations “at risk of mass violence” in various countries. The report indicates that Afghanistani citizens are experiencing systematic human rights violations by the Taliban.

Notably, this center was established by prominent human rights figures, including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the former President of Ireland, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and several non-governmental organizations, to examine and protect human rights issues.

The report emphasizes that the threat of war crimes and crimes against humanity persists in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The examination reveals that the Taliban predominantly target journalists, human rights defenders, and individuals affiliated with the former government. According to the report, gender-based violence by the Taliban is escalating into sexual assault and crimes against humanity.

The center also noted that despite the significant risk of crimes against humanity and the systematic violation of women’s rights in social, political, and economic spheres, there is no independent institution, including a Human Rights Commission, to document these violations in Afghanistan. The analysis highlights that the targeting of ethnic and religious minorities indicates the Taliban’s inability or unwillingness to protect vulnerable populations.

It is worth mentioning that the Taliban are considered terrorists and among the most significant human rights violators globally. This terrorist group has egregiously and consistently violated human rights, particularly those of women and girls. The Taliban not only deny citizens their rights and freedoms but also subject them to arrest, imprisonment, and torture.
