Continued Public Flogging of Accused Persons: One Man Whipped in Parwan

RASC News Agency: The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced that they publicly flogged a man in Parwan province on charges of engaging in a sexual relationship with another man. According to a statement released by the Taliban’s court on Monday, June 3, the court sentenced the accused to 39 lashes and one and a half years in prison.

The statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court noted that the flogging was conducted in accordance with the decision of the primary court in Seyyed Khel district of Parwan province and was carried out in public. In the past week, nearly 20 men and women in Parwan, Khost, Ghazni, and Paktika provinces have been publicly flogged by the Taliban on various charges, including extramarital sex, theft, and drug use.

Human rights organizations contend that the Taliban do not adhere to fair trial principles in their prisons and courts. These organizations have repeatedly called on the Taliban to cease the public punishment of accused individuals. A report by the human rights organization Rawadari indicates that Taliban courts are marked by discriminatory decisions, torture, forced confessions, and a lack of independence and impartiality, violating the principle of the presumption of innocence.
