RASC News Agency: Michael McCaul, Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, recently asserted that under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has become the “most oppressive” country in the world for women and girls. In a statement released on Thursday night, May 23rd, McCaul’s remarks were highlighted in response to the ongoing restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghanistani women and girls.
According to the statement, McCaul emphasized that Washington, in collaboration with its allies, must pressure the Taliban to cease human rights violations against innocent Afghanistani men, women, and children. The Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee contends that Afghanistan is currently grappling with a devastating humanitarian crisis under the “tyrannical” rule of the Taliban.
This Republican member of the House underscored that President Biden’s unilateral decision to withdraw from Afghanistan has nullified the hard-fought advancements in women’s rights and the promotion of democracy in the country. McCaul added, “Girls above the sixth grade are not allowed to attend school. Women are banned from working in government institutions. We know that religious minorities and press freedoms are being brutally suppressed by the Taliban.”
The Chairman also noted that the Taliban continue to engage in corporal punishment and harbor “terrorists.” He emphasized that American taxpayer money is not aiding the suffering women and children of Afghanistan, but rather is falling into the hands of Taliban loyalists. McCaul expressed his belief that former Afghanistani collaborators are being hunted down and persecuted by Taliban members.
He added, “It is time we do everything in our power to expedite special immigration visa applications and hold the Taliban accountable for their crimes. The people of Afghanistan must know that the United States stands behind them.” Since the Taliban regained control of the country, they have been consistently accused by international organizations of widespread human rights violations, particularly against women and girls.
During their nearly three-year rule, the Taliban have barred girls above the sixth grade from education and have transformed universities across the country into male-only institutions.
