RASC News Agency: Residents of Ghor province in western Afghanistan report that recent floods have destroyed over 7,000 homes. Halem, a resident of Ghor, told RASC News Agency on Sunday, May 20, that the floods have ravaged homes, leaving many people homeless.
He added that over 3,000 shops have been destroyed by the floods, dealing a severe blow to the local economy. Halem further noted that dozens of acres of farmland have been ruined, resulting in significant financial losses for the residents of Ghor province, in addition to the human casualties.
He stated that the floods have set back the lives of people in western Afghanistan, particularly in Ghor, by several years. Ghulam Rajab, another flood victim in Ghor, told RASC that the floods have inflicted severe damage on families in two ways. He said that while the loss of lives is tragic, the destruction of homes, shops, and farmland has also deeply affected the residents of Ghor province.
Rajab added that the financial assets of the people have been reduced to a state of bankruptcy due to the floods, with no assistance provided so far. Local Taliban officials in Ghor province report that the death toll from the floods has risen to 55, and 3,000 homes have been completely destroyed.
Abdul Wahid Hamas, the Taliban governor’s spokesperson for Ghor province, told the media that rescue teams are searching for victims and that the casualty figures may change. He added that three flights have been conducted to Ghor to provide emergency aid, including food, medicine, and temporary shelters for the flood victims.
Hamas also mentioned that a delegation from the Economic Affairs Office of the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office has traveled to Ghor to visit the affected families. However, local sources from RASC News Agency in western Afghanistan reported that over 120 residents of Ghor have died due to the floods, including members of Taliban families.
