RASC News Agency: Local sources from Takhar province report that the Taliban have detained Nasima Sadat, a women’s rights activist in the province. Sources informed the media on Wednesday, May 1, that Nasima Sadat was detained by the Taliban last Wednesday and has been held in the group’s prison in Takhar ever since.
According to the sources, Nasima Sadat has been working for several years, providing discreet “door-to-door” education to rural women and girls in Takhar to prevent domestic violence, forced marriages, and child marriages. Sources say the activist was detained by the Taliban while educating a family planning to marry off their 10-year-old daughter to a local elder.
The sources noted that the Taliban detained her from the village of Golmish in Baharak district, Takhar, and transferred her to their Department for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The sources also noted that several women who went to the Department for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice to advocate for Nasima Sadat’s release were violently beaten by members of the group.
Nasima Sadat is a mother of five children. The Taliban have not yet made any statement on this matter. During the Taliban’s nearly three-year rule over the country, they have consistently detained, imprisoned, and tortured women’s rights activists from various provinces and have not been held accountable for these actions.
