RASC News Agency: A group of Afghanistani exiled journalists in North America and Europe has openly requested the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to “in any possible way” facilitate the release of Ramin Amiri and Abdullah Ahmadi, two local journalists detained by the Taliban.
In a statement made available to the media on Thursday, Mar 28th, they stated that no explanation has been provided regarding the reason for the detention and “continuing deprivation of liberty” of both journalists by the Taliban. According to the statement, “The United Nations, its subsidiary bodies, and all relevant entities must exert pressure on the Taliban to prevent the detention of our colleagues.”
In this statement, exiled journalists emphasized the deprivation of freedom of journalists and media personnel as a serious violation of human rights and added that this should be considered a serious human rights violation on the Taliban’s record. They further added that they are requesting Richard Bent, the special rapporteur for human rights of the United Nations Human Rights Council for Afghanistan, to include one of his reports on the situation of journalists and freedom of expression in the country.
According to this statement, Abdullah Ahmadi was detained in Kunduz, and Ramin Amiri, a World Peace TV correspondent in Herat, has been detained by the Taliban recently. After their takeover of the country, the Taliban have detained, imprisoned, and tortured dozens of journalists on various charges in several provinces, and they are not accountable to any authority for their violent actions.
