RASC News Agency: John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor to the White House, recently asserted that there was a lack of proper understanding of Afghanistan’s situation during the signing of the Doha Agreement between the representatives of the United States and the Taliban. Bolton brought up this issue on Thursday, February 29th, during an interview with Voice of America. He added that both Joe Biden, the President of the United States, and Donald Trump, the former President of the country, bear responsibility for signing and aligning with the Doha Agreement.
He remarked that Donald Trump did not consider the consequences of withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan. Bolton stated, “Donald Trump intended to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan, but he disregarded the potential consequences.” Furthermore, he added, “It was entirely possible for Joe Biden to either completely withdraw from the Doha agreement or stipulate that the alignment of the withdrawal process would not commence until the Taliban provided further evidence of their commitments.”
The former National Security Advisor to the White House underscored that this agreement empowered the Taliban to seize control of Afghanistan and reverse the achievements of the past two decades in the country. It is noteworthy that the Doha Agreement between the Taliban and US representatives was signed on February 29th, 2020, after 18 months of negotiations between the two sides.
In this agreement, the Taliban pledged to uphold human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, and to engage in discussions to form an inclusive government with other parties. However, reports suggest that the Taliban have not honored any of their commitments.
