RASC News Agency: Human Rights Watch has stated that the significant reduction in foreign aid to Afghanistan’s healthcare system, alongside serious abuses by the Taliban against women and girls, has endangered the health rights of millions of Afghanistanis. The declaration was made by Human Rights Watch on Monday, Feb 12, in a 38-page report titled “A Predictable Catastrophe: Afghanistan’s Healthcare Crisis.”
According to the organization’s report, health crises have led to an increasing vulnerability of Afghanistanis to severe malnutrition and other illnesses. The decisions of donors to reduce humanitarian aid have weakened access to healthcare, exacerbated economic instability, and worsened food insecurity, as stated in the report. Farzanah Abbasi, a researcher in Afghanistan for Human Rights Watch, stated: “The loss of foreign development assistance and rights violations by the Taliban have resulted in a catastrophic healthcare crisis in Afghanistan, disproportionately affecting women and girls.”
The report from Human Rights Watch mentions that the ban on education for women and girls has closed avenues for future female healthcare workers. According to the organization, the deprivation of girls’ education will lead to severe shortages of these healthcare workers in Afghanistan’s future. It is noteworthy that under the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, girls have been deprived of their right to education, and both domestic and international authorities have repeatedly urged the group to lift these restrictions. However, the Taliban have consistently postponed lifting these restrictions.
