RASC News Agency: The White House has issued a warning to the U.S. Congress concerning the escalating humanitarian crisis and the potential economic collapse under the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan. On Wednesday night, Feb 7, the White House urged Congress to extend the national emergency status concerning Afghanistan under Executive Order 14064, issued on February 11, 2022, when the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan deteriorated under Taliban control.

Quoting President Joe Biden, the statement declared, “I have transmitted an annexed proclamation to the Federal Register for publication, declaring a national emergency based on the widespread humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and the potential for deep economic collapse in that country under Executive Order 14064. This situation will persist beyond February 11, 2024.” This order has facilitated Washington’s provision of aid to Afghanistan following the collapse of the previous government in the country.

According to the statement, the extensive humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, including urgent needs for food security, livelihood support, water, health services, shelter, and housing procurement, poses a serious threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy. Despite the Taliban’s takeover and control of the country, the United States remains one of the largest financial supporters of Afghanistan under Taliban rule, having sent billions of dollars to the country so far.

It is worth noting that the United Nations recently announced in a report that Afghanistan’s economy has suffered a “catastrophic collapse” with the return of the Taliban to power, stating that an economy that took 10 years to build has been destroyed in less than a year.
