RASC News Agency: Former US Deputy Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky has declared that the policies and treatment of Afghanistani women and girls by the Taliban are “oppressive” and “offensive.” As reported by Alamo TV on Saturday, Feb 3, Paula Dobriansky made these statements at the Wilson Center, additionally asserting that the Taliban have subjected detained women and girls to torture for not conforming to the group’s dress code.
The American official characterized the Taliban’s detention of women and girls as “arbitrary” and highlighted that some girls as young as 16 have been detained and subjected to torture by the group. Dobriansky further remarked, “I employ the term arbitrary detention. Numerous young women, even at the age of 16, have been detained and exposed to violence for not adhering to what is deemed appropriate.” In recent weeks, the Taliban’s morality police have detained numerous women and girls, predominantly young, from various areas of Kabul for failing to comply with the dress code enforced by the group, with the majority of detainees being Tajik and Hazara girls, as reported by the United Nations.
According to the former US Deputy Secretary of State, the normalization of relations with the Taliban will not serve the United States well, given that the group has not upheld its commitments regarding human rights and the establishment of an inclusive government. Throughout the Taliban’s rule over the past two years, women and girls have been subjected to the strict policies of the group, and despite widespread international and domestic condemnation, the group has not rescinded any restrictions.
