RASC News Agency: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Office has recently announced an upcoming meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the Afghan situation, marking another chapter in the ongoing international deliberations on the country. As per the information shared on social media, the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 20th. Roza Otenbayeva, the head of UNAMA, will join the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan in attending this gathering.
The primary objective of the impending meeting is for Roza Otenbayeva to provide the United Nations Security Council with a comprehensive update on the current situation in Afghanistan. It is noteworthy that the Security Council conducted a closed-door meeting on the same subject last week, the details of which were not disclosed to the media. The focus of that previous meeting was to assess the report prepared by Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the United Nations’ special coordinator, commissioned by the Secretary General with a forward-looking and strategic approach.
In contrast, the upcoming meeting aims to evaluate and scrutinize the report published earlier this week by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The report underscores ongoing human rights violations, encompassing extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, and the deliberate targeting of civilians in Afghanistan.
This is particularly alarming given previous reports indicating a severe deterioration of human rights under the control of the Taliban group. The Taliban has openly and explicitly violated human rights, especially those of women and former regime soldiers. Tomorrow’s meeting is convened to address these distressing findings and explore potential actions to rectify the situation.
