RASC News Agency: Local Taliban officials in Nangarhar province have announced the commencement of a polio vaccination campaign for over one million children in the region. Saeed Ahmad Banori, the deputy governor of the Taliban in Nangarhar province, stated to the media on Sunday , November 26th, that the polio vaccination campaign for children started in the province yesterday. According to this Taliban official, the week-long polio vaccination campaign aims to provide polio vaccines to one million and forty-five thousand children under the age of ten.
The deputy governor of the Taliban in Nangarhar province further urged the residents of the province to collaborate with vaccinators in the process of administering the polio vaccine to their children. It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries in the world that have yet to eradicate polio, and during the past year, six cases of polio paralysis have been reported in the country. All of these positive cases have occurred in Nangarhar province.
It should be noted that, according to some sources, the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on the work and activities of women in various sectors, including the healthcare sector, as well as the reduction in the number of female vaccinators, have had an influential role in this situation. It is important to mention that polio, also known as infantile paralysis, is a highly infectious disease that can cause paralysis or even death in children. The lasting effects of this disease can leave permanent disabilities, especially in young children, and the poliovirus is often transmitted through contaminated water sources.
