United Nations Human Rights Commissioner: The Suppression of Women and Girls by the Taliban Hinders the Progress of Afghanistan

RASC: Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, states that by oppressing women and girls, the Taliban destroy the grounds for Afghanistan’s progress and lead the country to deeper poverty and despair.

He said in a press conference in Geneva on Wednesday, May 24, that the Taliban group in Afghanistan is strongly seeking to eliminate half of the country’s population from daily life.

Volker Turk adds that this kind of gender apartheid system is an obstacle to the progress of this country and will cause serious harm.

“I will never understand how anyone can so cruelly demoralize girls and women, destroy their potential and drag their country deeper into poverty and despair,” she said.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasizes that for the sake of the citizens of Afghanistan, and for the future of this country, repressive policies against women and girls must be abolished as soon as possible.

This is despite the fact that women and girls under the control of the Taliban group are not allowed to study or work.

This action of the Taliban group has brought global criticism, but the officials of the Taliban group consider these criticisms about human rights as interference in internal affairs.
