Sirajuddin Haqqani Resigns: A Major Rift Within the Taliban Leadership?

RASC News Agency: The Indian media outlet India has reported that Sirajuddin Haqqani, leader of the notorious Haqqani Network, has resigned from his position as the Taliban’s Minister of Interior. This sudden resignation, coupled with growing internal discord, could have profound implications for the future of the Taliban regime, the report suggests. “Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, internal divisions have steadily intensified, reaching a level that can no longer be ignored,” the report states. According to India, Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has systematically sidelined and weakened key officials within the regime. Sources indicate that Haqqani’s resignation stems from escalating tensions with Akhundzada, signaling a deepening power struggle within the Taliban’s leadership.

Taliban insiders told India that Haqqani had been in sharp disagreement with the group’s policies, particularly regarding the ban on women’s education, foreign diplomacy, and governance strategies. The sources further revealed that following his return to Kabul, Haqqani is currently “resting” and refraining from political engagements. The report highlights growing dissatisfaction among senior Taliban figures, including members of the influential Haqqani Network, over Akhundzada’s rigid policies. This frustration has intensified over the strict prohibition of women’s education, the regime’s diplomatic isolation, and the Taliban’s centralized governance approach.

Furthermore, India asserts that since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the Haqqani Network under Sirajuddin Haqqani’s leadership has actively sought to expand its influence within the government. However, Akhundzada and his inner circle have resisted these efforts, determined to maintain absolute control and prevent any faction from consolidating power independently. Previous reports have suggested that Haqqani’s dissatisfaction with Akhundzada’s leadership had been mounting for months. His prolonged absence from Kabul and the Ministry of Interior was widely seen as an indication of his growing discontent.

If confirmed, Haqqani’s resignation could mark a turning point in the Taliban’s internal power dynamics, exposing deep fractures within the regime and potentially reshaping the group’s future trajectory.
