RASC News Agency: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced the provision of essential medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to Ghazni Hospital, addressing urgent healthcare needs following recent catastrophic traffic accidents on the Kabul-Kandahar highway. In a statement released on Thursday, the ICRC emphasized that this assistance is specifically aimed at treating the victims of these devastating incidents. Meanwhile, Kabul’s Emergency Hospital reported that 21 individuals injured in the Kabul-Kandahar highway crashes have been transferred to its facility for specialized care.
The accidents, which occurred on Wednesday night, involved two passenger buses colliding with two gas tankers at separate locations approximately 15 kilometers apart on the Kabul-Kandahar highway. These collisions resulted in nearly 60 fatalities, with many others sustaining serious injuries. Tragically, women and children were among those killed and injured. In response to these accidents, the Taliban-controlled Ministry of Transport announced the suspension of operations for two passenger transport companies implicated in the incidents during an emergency meeting.
Traffic accidents continue to pose a significant threat across Afghanistan, with a high death toll reported in various regions. In the past month alone, approximately 20 individuals lost their lives in accidents in Badakhshan, six in Herat, and two in Ghor. Traffic authorities have attributed these frequent accidents to factors such as excessive speeding, driver negligence, and, in some cases, intoxicated drivers. The ICRC’s timely intervention underscores the dire need for improved traffic safety measures and enhanced healthcare resources in Afghanistan.
