European Media: Afghanistani Refugees Tortured in Turkish Deportation Centers

RASC News Agency: According to reports from “Politico”, “Der Spiegel”, and other European media outlets, Afghanistani and Syrian refugees detained in Turkish deportation centers are being subjected to physical abuse, mistreatment, and inhumane conditions. These centers, funded in part by the European Union, have been accused of severe human rights violations, while European authorities have largely overlooked these abuses. Investigations indicate that Turkey, using EU-funded equipment and facilities, has forcibly deported hundreds of thousands of Afghanistani and Syrian refugees. EU contributions totaling at least €213 million have gone toward the construction and renovation of 30 deportation centers across Turkey. Refugees confined to these facilities endure extreme overcrowding, unsanitary environments, and frequent incidents of physical abuse and torture.

Many refugees are reportedly coerced into signing documents under duress, falsely declaring their “voluntary” return. Survivors recount being subjected to beatings and confinement in freezing cells for up to 12 hours. Additionally, reports suggest that Turkish officials systematically ignored the basic rights of these refugees. Journalistic investigations reveal that those detained in these centers face significant obstacles in contacting legal representation or reaching out to family members. Despite the overwhelming evidence of rights violations within these centers, senior EU officials have repeatedly failed to address the issue.

Disturbing reports have previously emerged detailing the abuse of Afghanistani migrants by Turkish authorities, including shocking incidents where police have severed the tendons of young refugees to prevent their return to Turkey. These findings cast a critical light on the role of EU financial support in sustaining deportation practices that have resulted in widespread and systematic abuse. The ongoing reports underscore the urgent need for greater accountability and scrutiny regarding the treatment of refugees within these EU-funded facilities.
